Even more Thermodynamics and Optimality… A. Precipitation and B. Energy Transition
I provide an update on viewing Earth system processes in thermodynamic terms, focussing on two recent applications: (a.) a more complete picture of the hydrologic cycle that includes optimising precipitation and (b.) developing a thermodynamic explanation of why combustion-based technologies are inherently inefficient compared to more modern alternatives, and that the energy transition represents a transition to more efficient-energy human societies. I demonstrate how both examples can be used to better communicate aspects relating to global climate change and the energy transition in simple yet physically-based terms.
